Biography
Margaret Kissel Gohn is an American artist who maintains a studio in Dane County, Wisconsin. Margaret began her life in Indianapolis, growing up being influenced by landscape paintings created by her grandmother (father's mother), Ethel Trim Volz. There were other paintings in the house, and elsewhere, and she particularly noticed the atmosphere, structure, and brushwork.
After High School, Margaret went on to earn a Bachelors of Fine Art degree at the University of Evansville in Southern Indiana. Carolyn Roth was an influential professor. Margaret won the Best of Show award and Gumbert's award for her painting, "Water 1", an acrylic painting, in her sophomore year. It was nearly 10 year later that she took up oil painting, after seeing the exhibit, "Monet in the 90's" at the Art Institute in Chicago. By that time she was living next to a forest near Brownstown, Indiana, with a husband and 2 young children.
For 10 years, Ms. Gohn worked as an illustrator and graphic designer at Sunrise Greetings in Bloomington, Indiana, where her designs and illustrations reached an international audience. After that, she studied painting at Indiana State University with Nancy Nichols-Pethick. As a graduate student, she taught drawing, and art appreciation classes, and then went on to teach at Herron School of Art & Design at IUPUI, the University of Evansville, and Ivy Tech Community College, before moving to Wisconsin.
Nature has long been her main focus. Margaret has painted plein air (French for outside in the open air) off and on over the years, (sometimes dabbling in other media - including limestone). Often finding wildflowers in the woods to paint. She also has grown fields of wildflowers over the years which she painted. One Spring, she backpacked supplies to several waterfalls in and around the Great Smokey Mountain National Park.
Margaret has won Best of Show awards at the Plein Air competition at the T.C. Steele State Historic Site paint out near Nashville, Indiana. She painted in the inaugural paint out in Cambridge, Wisconsin, in 2023, sponsored by the Art Hub, winning an honorable mention. She is currently enjoying 'painting the town' and various scenes in the local area.
Some of her paintings can be seen at the Art Hub - 145 W. Main Street, Cambridge, Wisconsin.
